Cristal Nell was 4 months pregnant when she contacted us. She and her husband Garett had just moved into a beautiful brand new house, but they were eating off a card table. The TV was sitting on the floor, and their 3-year old son, Gabe, was happily sprawled out with legions of toys overflowing from every corner. It was time for them to turn this house into a home.
Their daily lives were kid-centered, so when tackling their interior, they decided to focus on the areas where they spent the most time: the family room and the eating area off the kitchen. The key was to find pieces that were sturdy and child-proof; the furniture needed to stand up to their active lifestyle, which included messes and spills. The other challenge was to provide the Nells with adequate toy storage so that there was a place for everything; even if they were not normally put away, there was at least the option to hide the toys if need-be. Cristal described her style as leaning more toward the traditional, so we used rich colors and detailed lines but nothing overly elaborate. And to protect the family and the earth from toxic fumes, we used Eco-friendly paints (Benjamin Moore Natura) throughout the project.
In the end, baby Scarlet was born, and we were able to create a comfortable and budget-friendly interior that kids as well as parents can enjoy.
